Two things happened this week — neither of them involved logging a weight loss, but both were inspirational.
First, a little over a week ago, I decided to convert my online only Weight Watchers membership to one where I can attend meetings. I’ve now attended two meetings. At both meetings, I mostly listened, but chimed in when I thought I had something worth contributing. In both instances, my comments were things I say often to people who ask about my weight loss. I really didn’t think anything of it.
When the second meeting ended, I was talking “shop” with several fellow members. This is common practice at a Weight Watchers meeting, and comforting. We’re all there for the same reason. There’s an instant camaraderie.
What I didn’t expect, was the woman who said she’d thought about me during the week based on what I’d said at the previous meeting (I had shared that at the beginning of my journey I choose to have a Culver’s Chocolate Malt and took the hit for the 28 points — the equivalent to almost an entire day’s points — all in an effort to avoid feeling deprived). The second surprise, was the woman who told me how she’s been struggling to lose anything significant lately, but what I said about taking control — and knowing I CAN control what I eat in a world where I can’t control a lot of the things in my life — resonated so strongly with her it brought tears to her eyes. By the time we finished talking we were fast friends and hugged before going our separate ways.
I started this blog not only to chronicle my weight loss journey but also to help others succeed in reaching their weight loss goals. Saturday was the first time someone told me that what I said made a difference to them. It inspired me to buckle down and have a really amazing week as I, too, have been struggling a bit, of late. I’m not gaining, I just keep going up and down in the same 3 pounds. Then, I’ll lose a few pounds entering a new “weight category” and then it starts over again. It’s annoying. It’s aggravating. But, it’s progress. Slow but steady wins the race, right?
Perhaps, if I actually exercised this wouldn’t keep happening to me. Which brings me to the second thing that happened. I was on the Weight Watchers Connect community, browsing through people’s stories and successes — which are so inspirational. I stumbled on a post that belonged to a friend of mine. In early April she posted that she had reached her step goal of 10,000 steps a day, every day for an ENTIRE YEAR. She commented that she and her daughter find places to go walk (think the aisles of Costco) in order to accomplish this. I am in AWE. I am JEALOUS. I am MOTIVATED. I have so much trouble getting my steps in that my goal is only 6,000 steps a day — and I have trouble accomplishing that. It’s embarrassing. So, starting today — May 2, I am going to reach my goal of a MINIMUM of 6,000 steps a day. I’m not sure how I will do it, but I will find a way. It just takes commitment and dedication. I can do that! I may be visiting Costco a lot myself. If only we lived in the same city, I could possibly run into my friend!
This was such an interesting week and I feel so inspired as a result. A huge thank you to my new friends in my local Weight Watchers meeting who welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home right away. Thank you to my friend for sharing her step goal accomplishment with the universe. Thank goodness I stumbled upon it. You’ve all kindled the fire inside me to work even harder. I appreciate that more than you know.
What inspires you to keep working towards your goals?

My husband attends Slimming World classes (similar to Weightwatchers) – as well as a different one to one health specialist. He says that attending a group meeting gives him motivation to get on and lose that weight and get healthy than if he stuck to an online equivalent – he needs that accountability belonging to a group gives you.

I really agree with your husband. I did so much of this on my own and my family has been my support group. They are great at it, but it is really nice to be surrounded by people who are charting the same path. I’m still in disbelief that I did so much online, as the accountability element is critical!

This is a lovely post Robin, good luck with your journey. You are inspiring many others although you don’t know it.

Thanks so much Debbie. I really had no idea. It was so eye opening and humbling.

I do think finding a place to walk can make your goal so much easier!! You’d laugh if you saw me go up and down my stairs just to get in more steps. It might be good for my body, but not for the carpet!!

My girlfriend and I were just having that same conversation this morning! Luckily for me, my laundry room is upstairs near the bedrooms (love it) and I have to go up and down on laundry days — which is basically every day!! Lol!!

I remember the night before I was due to have my daughter, I remembered a customer who walked the mall, bulging belly, for two weeks trying to go into labor. So my mom and I chose to visit Hobby Lobby. There we designed a nursery, decorated my new house, and we made at least 20 laps…didn’t work, but we got some serious movement in! 😉

That’s hilarious! I did something similar before my first was born! I was dragged through an outdoor art fair in Chicago during a 90+ degree day. The child did not arrive for three more days after that! LOL!

I think I mentioned last month that I had started a new fitness program through work. Well, I lost 18 lbs in April, and ended up hitting 25,000 steps three different days last month.
Right now, feeling healthier and seeing the results inspires me, but so does trying to top my step total record, or trying to stay ahead of my coworkers in our fitness competitions.
I’m highly motivated right now, but I did have a chocolate shake today because my coworker bought it for me. She said I’ve been so good for over a month and deserved a reward. It was so delicious!!!

Austin — That’s awesome! Keep up the good work. To be successful in the weight loss world, we have to be able to enjoy food and our favorite shakes at that. I try to never have one in my possession — or in my hand — as for me, that’s a very slippery slope to making it a part of my daily diet! I usually get my fix taking a sip from one of my kids if they should happen to have one. In fact, this is so predictable, they usually offer it up as they know I just need a little taste.

Have you read David Sedaris’ essay on the topic? He buys a fit bit and gets so into the walking that he spends more and more of each day walking. By the end he is at 40,000 steps minimum each day. Then the fit bit either breaks or he loses it and he doesn’t even leave the couch. I can totally relate to that. My goal is 10k and I rarely make it. It helps when I have a podcast to listen to…and for me variety doesn’t help. I just walk the same route. If I mix it up I find ways to quit and head home early.
May 3, 2017 at 8:49 pm
Anna, I have not read that essay, but I will! I can completely relate.
As far as I’m concerned, the whole thing is a game and I have to find ways to trick myself into playing by the rules.
How much food I can eat for the least amount of points?
How many steps can I walk without exerting a whole lot of effort?
If I eat standing up, do I have to count it?
And, my favorite: If I eat after midnight I don’t know which day it should be tracked on, there for it doesn’t count, right?

I love this post a hundred different ways–or maybe 6,000 steps! I’m hitting the reset button on fitness commitment with you. Thank you!!

YAY Lee! You can do this. If I can do this, you can do this. So far I’m 2 for 2. Yesterday was 7,052. Today I’m at 8,029! Join me. Set the bar low — I am not even pretending to try for 10,000 steps! Let me know if you need someone to be accountable to! I can be that person.

Thanks so much Stacey! It’s mostly surreal to me — sometimes I don’t recognize myself in pictures — I know it’s me, but I don’t connect that it’s me. Does that make sense? I hope you’ll keep reading.

True story, my soon to be wife and I once walked in a Walmart for I think four miles. It was like 100 degrees that day and we were still in the new” phase of our relationship.

Inspiration nearly always comes when we least expect it, doesn’t it? I used to struggle to meet my step goals but am currently doing a StepBet and it forces me to push myself and get more steps everyday(or risk losing my $40 bet). It’s been really helpful!
May 4, 2017 at 9:05 am
I used to think that inspiration has to come from within, but I’ve learned that it really does come from surprising places. Maybe you have to be open to it, in order to see it! Love that you’re doing a StepBet. Since I posted this blog post and received so many “you can do its” I now am doing it! Who knew a little blog post could generate such amazing support!
I thank you and everyone else who has responded — for you have all given me inspiration and motivation!

Sounds like a really motivating week! My kids are destroying my walking currently! I used to walk a lot, and I walked loads with the buggy. But now they are both not using buggy, but are still at that stage where it’s annoying to walk anywhere with them – they’re too slow and run off all the time. So I’m avoiding walking at present!

Love this! Brought a tear to MY eyes! It is hard to reach fitness goals alone! Good for you, Robin for stretching yourself and becoming more involved in your community group! I had a lot of trouble maintaining regular exercise until my husband was diagnosed type 2 diabetic a year ago. He decided to beat it with daily exercise of walking at least two miles and going vegan! We’re doing it together! He lost over 30 lbs and I lost a few, too! It’s been great to share the journey! Oh, and his diabetes is reversed! A1C down below 6!
May 8, 2017 at 11:32 am
Sharon, I completely identify! I, too, was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic a number of years ago — maybe 5-ish. When I was at my last dr. appointment (after losing about 60 pounds) my A1C was down to 6.0! Dr. said if it’s below 6 at my next appointment (which is in a couple weeks), he’ll start reducing the one medication I take (not insulin). Fingers crossed!! Congrats to your hubby!

All I can say, get a dog!!! You will HAVE to do your daily walkies, no matter what. You know that I also need some sort of exercise on a daily base due to my health conditions. My dog is the best motivator ever, he demands his walkies no matter what mood I’m in, whether it’s nice or rainy, the dog needs to be walked. But I am sure, you will make it anyway, Power girl !!!!
